Admissions & Programs

Admissions (In Take) Program

Lake Country SPCA takes in around 700 homeless, neglected, or owner surrendered animals each year through our admission program.  Our admissions program is on a case-by-case basis and is determined on available space at the shelter, space at our foster care homes, our current waiting list, and the needs of our partnering animal control facility. This managed intake program allows us to prioritize the needs of the animal and prioritize the acceptance of the incoming animals most at-risk of euthanasia.  We never euthanize an animal to make room for incoming animals – we are a NO-KILL shelter. The sheer volume of incoming animals creates the most risk for euthanasia in other shelters.  Remember, you can help prevent unwanted litters by having your pet spayed and neutered and not surrendering your pet!

Our Process

Managing the intake of animals into our facility and care allows us to properly ensure a positive, healthy outcome for the animals that need our help – whether they need a safe place to stay, medical treatment, or a second chance at adoption into a loving, caring home.

All our animal intakes start by calling the front desk at 434-374-8076 or emailing us at lakecountryspca@yahoo.com.  Please leave a message if no one is available to take your call.

Found a Cat/Kitten:

Is it a feral cat (wild) or friendly cat?

If feral, please see the information on Alley Cats Allies website.  Feral cats have not been socialized to humans and will avoid human contact. Lake Country SPCA can NOT take in feral cats.  We can NOT pick up any stray animals.

If friendly, 1. Check with your neighbors to see if the kitty belongs to someone.  Any vet clinic will have a scanner to see if the cat has a microchip or look for a collar for identification.

2. What is the health condition of the cat? Is it well-groomed and at a healthy weight?  Or does it look starved, abandoned, or in need of medical treatment? It’s up to you if you can provide shelter, clean water and food or take the cat to the vet for medical treatment.

3. Contact the shelter at 434-374-8076 to find out if we have available space to take the friendly stray cat/kitten.  We are a "No-Kill" shelter and we have available space when animals are adopted, fostered, or transferred to another shelter. We cannot guarantee how long the wait will be, but will give you our best estimated date and information on how to care for the animal in the meantime.

4. If you cannot keep the animal till we have available space, please contact other no-kill animal shelters for available space.

Found a Dog/Puppy:

If friendly, 1. Check with your neighbors to see if the dog/puppy belongs to someone.  Any vet clinic will have a scanner to see if the dog has a microchip or look for a collar for identification. Lake Country SPCA can NOT pick up any stray animals.

2. What is the health condition of the dog? Is it well-groomed and at a healthy weight?  Or does it look starved, abandoned, or in need of medical treatment? It’s up to you if you can provide shelter, clean water and food or take the dog to the vet for medical treatment.

3. Contact the shelter at 434-374-8076 to find out if we have available space to take the friendly stray dog. We are a "No-Kill" shelter and we have available space when animals are adopted, fostered, or transferred to another shelter. We cannot guarantee how long the wait will be, but will give you our best estimated date and information on how to care for the animal in the meantime.

4. If the dog is skittish or if you cannot keep the animal till we have available space, please contact Mecklenburg Animal Control at 434-738-6191 X "0" to pick up the stray dog/puppy. We work very closely with them.  Please note, that it is not a guarantee that the animal will not be euthanized by animal control.
